She should really get that looked at.

Rose of the Week

Free Spirit! This is a very flavorful rose-looks like orange sherbert. It is light orange with hot pink tips and a nice high petal count. Free Spirit smells fabulous and opens up nice and full. "It's heaven in a vase!" says Julie.

Lady's Slipper Orchid

We have this beautiful Lady's Slipper Orchid for sale. Dark red and lime green coloring makes it a great fall gift, and its pouch makes it very unique. Here is a fun fact: the Lady's Slipper is the state flower in Minnesota and the state wildflower in New Hampshire. What do you think?

Becky is next up!

Our spotlight this week is Becky. She has been with Stevens and Son for 5 years. Before joining our team she worked for Nursery Supply Wholesale Foliage and Growers. That makes her our resident plant expert.  Her favorite part about her job is getting to touch all the beautiful flowers that come through our doors. Her favorite flower/plant is an orchid. Becky likes to get into the holiday spirit and will be dressing as a gypsy for Halloween. Her favorite candy is anything chocolate. She loves to garden in her spare time and was very proud of her pepper plants this year! Becky is known around here for her wacky personality and for whistling while she works.

Fall Tints at Stevens

So with fall here we are seeing lots of orange and red tinted product in our coolers like this waxflower and solidago. Seems like it's a split decision on whether you love or hate tints. What is your opinion? Does it add to the product?

Rose of the Week!

Coffee Break!
Beautiful bi-color rose that opens nice and big. It has fun ruffled petals and a nice shape. They are holding up very nicely. Make sure to get Coffee Break from Stevens and Son!

Why Leaves Turn in Fall.

Found this article from Science Made Simple. I always wondered what exactly caused the leaves to change to such amazing colors. Now I know.
http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/leaves.html

Leaves are nature's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose. Oxygen is a gas in the air that we need to breathe. Glucose is a kind of sugar. Plants use glucose as food for energy and as a building block for growing. The way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar is called photosynthesis. That means "putting together with light." A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees "know" to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.
autumn leaves sceneThe bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. In some trees, like maples, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the leaves turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves.
It is the combination of all these things that make the beautiful fall foliage colors we enjoy each year.

It's beginning to look a lot like....

BOB!

This week were taking a detour over to "Pack Land" to visit with Shipping Supervisor Bob. I have to say he was quite shy about getting his photo taken, but I was able to snap this lovely shot. Bob has worked here at Stevens for 10 years. He started out as a delivery driver and has worked his way up to safely packing your flowers and coordinating deliveries. Bob's favorite flower is Delphinium, and his favorite season is Spring. I know what you are all thinking...what is the reason behind the mustache??? Turns out he lost a bet.
Slight resemblance???

Sandy's Neighborhood!

Sandy finally decided to decorate her corner of the neighborhood. We have the new smiling addition of Stanley the scarcrow.
But let's get to the real shining star of the neighborhood...Royal Sunset! Such a beautiful lily. Great fall colors and cute little freckles in the middle! Don't forget to show this lily off in your Autumn arrangments

Pumpkin Ideas!

Here is a little post in the spirit of the holiday. I was looking for alternative pumpkin ideas and found some cute twists.
I love the idea of notching out fun and festive designs without carving out the whole pumpkin. Less mess :)

Since we are a wholesale florist, I thought I would tribute the flower pumpkins. Fun way to spruce up your shop or table. (Pumpkins and Gourds available at Stevens and Son.)

I also love the idea of painted pumpkins. The white is nice and classy and can work with any decor. A nice pop of fall flowers or foliage would compliment nicely.
I think my favorite decorating idea is the Boo pumpkin on the fireplace.

Make sure to get your pumpkins and gourds here at Stevens :)

Next Up.......

Audrey!
This shining, smiling face has worked at Stevens for 18 years! She has 32 years in the floral industry. This is her favorite time of year because of the fall colors. She is not a huge fan of Halloween, but I am pushing her to wear a Halloween costume this year! She loves orange, bronze and butterscotch, but her favorite flower is the Royal Sunset Lily. Her favorite part about working for Stevens is the customers. She loves and respects how hard working florists are. Audrey is known around here for her boisterous laugh :)
