Here is a small update on the progress we are making in our "Green" efforts. We were able to find a company to recycle our plastic straps and plastic sleeves. We just separate them into these large containers and off to recycling they go. We recycled 6 containers full of straps and sleeves in just over a months time!

Fun fact: The Plastic Straps are highly recyclable and will be remade into items such as carpet, sports clothing and nylon netting.

Rose of the week...Hot Merengue

Hot Merengue has a very unique color. Yellow with some hot pink edges. Nice petal count. As you can see it opened up nicely. Not much of a scent, but it caught people's attention at the front counter. Try out this beautiful rose in your Spring arrangements!

Here is a beautiful bi-color rose called Blush. It has a cream body and hot coral edge to the petals that darkens at the tips. Blush has a fairly small head but a good petal count and nice shape. This rose has great contrast. We will check back in later this week.

When you receive your Hellebores flowers from us, trima bit off the stems and immediately plunge the stem ends (1/2”) into hot water containing a floralpreservative for about 15 seconds. Tinted Rainbow. Here is a unique rose we are trying out this week. Tinted Rainbow roses are injected with different color dyes in the stems of the flower to create the unique different colored petals. These should be very eye catching once they open!

Freesia Trick!

Ever notice how the first blossom on a fresh stem of Freesiadies right away?

Flower care trick: NEVER cut Freesia!

Freesia have the strongest vascular system of just about anyflower. Plus when you cut the stem; a surge of ethylene rushes up the stem andkills the open blossom.

So…when you get your Freesia (no matter how far it hascome…EVEN if the ends of the stem look calloused) resist the urge to give it afresh cut!

Simply place it into ICE COLD water treated with the ChrysalFloral Nutrient Bulb food…and remove bands and sleeves. You’ll be PleasantlySurprised that EVERY bud will open in sequence…all the way to the end!

P.S. It only works with Freesia…kinda goes againsteverything we’ve been taught…but try it once and you’ll be a believer.

Luke! This week we are spotlighting one of our drivers. Luke has worked for Stevens for a year and a half. He likes his job because he gets to drive around and see the state. This week we are highlighting the lovely Laurel. Laurel has worked at Stevens for 6 years. She just recently semi-retired from her position in sales to a part time position working in our hard goods department. Laurel adores her job because she loves flowers and the crew here at Stevens. The flowers that top her favorites list are Coxcomb and Orchids/Mokara. She is one of those crazy kids that loves the snow, and now that we are gearing up for the holidays and that yummy turkey dinner, I asked Laurel what special dish will be on her table...Pecan Squares. Yum! In her spare time she likes to throw...pottery that is, and spend time with her cat Jaz. Laurel is notorious for the constant mispronunciation of her name...Laura, Lauren, Laurie, Lau....

That makes her our resident plant expert. Her favorite part about her job is getting to touch all the beautiful flowers that come through our doors. Her favorite flower/plant is an orchid. Becky likes to get into the holiday spirit and will be dressing as a gypsy for Halloween. Her favorite candy is anything chocolate. She loves to garden in her spare time and was very proud of her pepper plants this year! Becky is known around here for her wacky personality and for whistling while she works.

Why Leaves Turn in Fall.

Leaves are nature's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose. Oxygen is a gas in the air that we need to breathe. Glucose is a kind of sugar. Plants use glucose as food for energy and as a building block for growing. The way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar is called photosynthesis. That means "putting together with light." A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees "know" to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.
The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. In some trees, like maples, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the leaves turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves.
It is the combination of all these things that make the beautiful fall foliage colors we enjoy each year.

This week were taking a detour over to "Pack Land" to visit with Shipping Supervisor Bob. I have to say he was quite shy about getting his photo taken, but I was able to snap this lovely shot. Bob has worked here at Stevens for 10 years. He started out as a delivery driver and has worked his way up to safely packing your flowers and coordinating deliveries. Bob's favorite flower is Delphinium, and his favorite season is Spring. I know what you are all thinking...what is the reason behind the mustache??? Turns out he lost a bet.

Pumpkin Ideas!

Here is a little post in the spirit of the holiday. I was looking for alternative pumpkin ideas and found some cute twists.

I love the idea of notching out fun and festive designs without carving out the whole pumpkin. Less mess :)

Since we are a wholesale florist, I thought I would tribute the flower pumpkins. Fun way to spruce up your shop or table. (Pumpkins and Gourds available at Stevens and Son.)

I also love the idea of painted pumpkins. The white is nice and classy and can work with any decor. A nice pop of fall flowers or foliage would compliment nicely.

I think my favorite decorating idea is the Boo pumpkin on the fireplace.

She has worked in the floral industry for 17 years and here at Stevens for 6 years. She has been a selector, a dabbler in sales, a front desk chick and a guard dog for prebook flowers. She is know for her lightening fast fingers and shining mop of blonde hair. She is super excited Fall is here because of the fall colors and she can't wait for the pumpkin spice coffee creamer!

Outdoor Garden Mum Sale!

Peonies were the most popular answer. Orchids were also popular, but the answers were spread out between Phalaenopsis, Oncidiums and Cymbidiums.

Elizabeth Newberry

Elizabeth Newberry was a co-owner of the Denver based Newberry Brothers Greenhouse and Florist. Elizabeth was married to Weldon, one of the original four Newberry brothers, and started wholesale growing in Colorado, in 1945. Elizabeth and her daughter Paula have been running the business at 201 Garfield and have made it one of Colorado's top floral decorating services. Tuesday evening Elizabeth Newberry passed away at the age of 89.

Memorial services are to be scheduled for sometime in the early part of July. Please check back for the date and time of the service.

Here is one of our 18" Petunia Baskets. They are just so full and beautiful! The best I have seen and they come straight from our greenhouse! Our boys do such a great job back there! Designer/Wholesaler Relationship-
One day when I stopped by Alicia’s shop we started talking about the relationships we have with our wholesale sales representatives. It made me evaluate the relationships I have with my reps and it dawned on me that this working relationship is probably the most important I have as a designer. I rely on them to find the product I “have to have”, sometimes with very little notice or in outrageous quantities. If either of us do not do our jobs well then neither of us will be successful.
So what does it take to have a strong relationship between a designer and their rep? Well I know what I need and expect but what does my rep need? I decided to ask my go to guy for all of my wedding and special event product. I have had the good fortune to work closely Randy Hall at Stevens & Son here in Denver to source all of my “have to have” flowers for the past five years.
Here is what Randy had to say…

What is the best time frame to order wedding flowers?

Generally 7 to 10 days is enough lead time for most orders. If the order has large quantities of hard to obtain items or specialty items such as garden roses it’s best to book as soon as the deposit is paid.

When ordering wedding flowers how specific should a designer be?

Details are very important if we are going to get the order right! These days most wedding orders are transmitted via email which leaves a solid paper trail of the details sent to the wholesaler. Using variety names is always best but if they are not known describe the color best as possible or use another flower or commonly know product to describe the color. IE: Pepsi can blue.

When working with a wholesaler what is the biggest mistake a designer can make?

Lack of lead time. Lack of detail.

What are the keys to a successful relationship between a wholesaler and designer?

Establishing a mutual trust which first begins with the wholesaler by proving the ability to fulfill orders accurately. Not all products (even common products) are available every week. The designer needs to learn to be flexible when a problem does arise that is no fault of the wholesaler.

Are you seeing any big trends this year?

To early in the season to pick up on trends but Carnations are making a comeback and I’m hearing watermelon to frequently.

What is your favorite flower or foliage?

My personal favorite are the Anemones with dark centers.

New Flowers!

With the changing of the seasons comes new flowers here at Stevens. Since this is my first summer here I get to learn about all these new fun flowers as they come in!

First off is Nigella also called Love in a Mist. Its got some unique fern like foliage that surrounds the delicate looking flower. Nigella blooms late spring into fall.

Next in we have some Stellata Pods. These pods are the left over of a Scabiosa flower. Very interesting patterns in the pod.

Ageratum is another new flower just in at Stevens. This filler flower comes in blue and white as well and has a super fun soft petal.

Phlox caught my eye this week. Thank goodness its much prettier than the name lets on. Beautiful little pink flowers perfect for summer.

How can you not fall in love with the beautiful blue of the Aggie! So pretty!

I know you all have seen these popping up in everyones yards. Pretty pink and orange Poppies. I love the paper like quality of the flowers. And next to the Poppy is the Poppy Pod. Love the star shape on the top of these pods.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day History
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.
The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.
The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns.
Local Observances Claim To Be First Local springtime tributes to the Civil War dead already had been held in various places. One of the first occurred in Columbus, Miss., April 25, 1866, when a group of women visited a cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers who had fallen in battle at Shiloh. Nearby were the graves of Union soldiers, neglected because they were the enemy. Disturbed at the sight of the bare graves, the women placed some of their flowers on those graves, as well.
Today, cities in the North and the South claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1866. Both Macon and Columbus, Ga., claim the title, as well as Richmond, Va. The village of Boalsburg, Pa., claims it began there two years earlier. A stone in a Carbondale, Ill., cemetery carries the statement that the first Decoration Day ceremony took place there on April 29, 1866. Carbondale was the wartime home of Gen. Logan. Approximately 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, many of them in the South where most of the war dead were buried.
Official Birthplace Declared In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. Supporters of Waterloo’s claim say earlier observances in other places were either informal, not community-wide or one-time events.
By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities.
It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays.
Some States Have Confederate Observances Many Southern states also have their own days for honoring the Confederate dead. Mississippi celebrates Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April, Alabama on the fourth Monday of April, and Georgia on April 26. North and South Carolina observe it on May 10, Louisiana on June 3 and Tennessee calls that date Confederate Decoration Day. Texas celebrates Confederate Heroes Day January 19 and Virginia calls the last Monday in May Confederate Memorial Day.
Gen. Logan’s order for his posts to decorate graves in 1868 “with the choicest flowers of springtime” urged: “We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. ... Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.”
The crowd attending the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was approximately the same size as those that attend today’s observance, about 5,000 people. Then, as now, small American flags were placed on each grave — a tradition followed at many national cemeteries today. In recent years, the custom has grown in many families to decorate the graves of all departed loved ones.
The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War over 24 centuries ago that could be applied today to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in the nation’s wars: “Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men.”
To ensure the sacrifices of America ’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” P.L. 106-579, creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance. The commission’s charter is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity” by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance.
The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”

She was a late bloomer, but that doesn't mean we aren't proud of her! Now I kinda feel like I should keep her. I have spent so much time with her already! :-)

Pretty Much Picasso!

Pretty Much Picasso has made a splash in the greenhouse this season! The first planting has sold out so make sure you order a basket for our second planting available

Memorial Day! Only $19.99

Pretty Much Picasso is one of the Supertunia series. Its a very fun flower that has tons of beautiful blooms. The flower is a beautiful magenta with deep purple veins and center. The uniqueness of this petunia is in the lime green tips that frame the flower. It makes for such an eye catching addition to your garden! This plant never needs pinching, the blooms self-clean! I know you all love that!

Pretty Much Picasso reaches just 8 to 12 inches high, but spreads several feet wide. The baskets in our greenhouse reach over 3.5". They love the sun and need water regularly, but don't worry they are hearty plants and will continue blooming all throughout the summer and into early fall!

La Mancha Oriental Lily

This is a new beautiful oriental lily we are growing here at Stevens. Look at those HUGE light raspberry blooms, with ruby red bands and lighter edges have darker colored speckles for contrast. Such a great deal! Perfect for Mother's Day.
